Parent Information

May I visit my son or daughter during the Academy?
Certainly! If you'd like to come and spend a day with your child, that'd be perfectly okay. We just ask that you let us know you are on campus and in the residential halls.

Who will be supervising my child?
All activities in the research labs will be supervised by faculty mentors and/or graduate students. Participants will likely spend a day or two reviewing safety procedures for many projects. Summer camp counselors and residential staff are present and available while students are in the residential halls.

It is important that you and your parents know that this program is set-up in a way that gives participants an introduction to college life. Therefore, during a great deal of time the students are self-supervised. Each participant will be given phone numbers and email addresses of staff, which they can call when needed. It is also important that you and your parents are aware that there will be other camps and current Missouri S&T students staying in the residential hall. Since it is physically impossible to be present with all participants at all times, it is up to the participants to exercise responsibility, good judgment, and abide by the rules. SRA participants that violate any program rules, residential rules, university rules, or local/federal laws will be dismissed from the program with no refund given.

To ensure that all participants receive an enjoyable and safe camp experience we have set rules and guidelines that MUST be followed by all participants. If we feel that you are in violation of any rule or guideline your parents will be called and you will be dismissed from the camp immediately.

Do I have to attend Move-In Day with my child?
If you have submitted all required forms, you are not required to attend Move-In Day. If you do choose to escort your child to campus for check-in, SRA coordinators and staff will be available at Thomas Jefferson Hall during check-in hours for you to ask questions.

I am worried about sending my child to Missouri S&T for the summer. Is this normal?
Yes. We expect parents to be active participants in the learning process. Check in with your child regularly and let us know if they're having difficulties so we can help. Come and visit for a day. Rest assured that safety, security and simply having fun are our utmost concern. We understand the challenges of working with teenagers and will pull out all the stops to make the Academy a positive experience!

If my child doesn't enjoy their research project after a few days, can he/she switch?
We'll work with your child to find the best fit. However, once projects are assigned, we are unable to change participant's projects once they have been accepted into the program.

South-central Missouri's premier regional hospital is a few blocks from campus. Due to insurance purposes, Summer Research Academy participants are not eligible for care at the campus student health facility.

My child is not currently planning to attend Missouri S&T for college. Is the Academy still a good idea?
The Academy's goal is to establish itself as the premier summer research program in the country. We believe that you will not find another program that can equal the research opportunities, access to faculty, student participation and overall experience! Missouri S&T has been informally hosting students for summer research projects for decades.
