Summer Activities

We are working hard to plan social events, overnight industry field-trips to Chicago and St. Louis, guest lectures and hands-on activities to offer a fun and rewarding summer experience. Many of these activities are still in planning stages, but we can offer a tentative outline of what we're working to accomplish:

Raft Race

Overnight Industry Trips

An itinerary won't be finalized for several months, but we're hoping to visit both Chicago and St. Louis. In Saint Louis we are working with companies like Boeing, Anheuser-Busch, Nooter/Eriksen, Solae, Monsanto and Jacob's Engineering for plant tours and sit-downs with corporate leaders. Of course, a trip to Saint Louis wouldn't be complete without an evening Cardinal's baseball game!

The entire group will venture to the Windy City for 3-4 days with likely stops at Caterpillar, the Fermi National Accelerator Lab, BNSF Railways, some sightseeing and an afternoon at the Science and Industry Museum and Shedd Aquarium.

Hands-On Activities

Throughout the Academy, various academic departments will welcome everyone for group activities. Once each week we'll make stops at places like the metallurgy foundry, Missouri S&T's experimental mine, proto-typing and design labs, nuclear reactor tour, laser labs and electron microscope demonstrations. A few activities will include trips, such as a geological excursion to the New Madrid Fault. A morning biology lab researching hell-bender salamanders will leave enough time to squeeze in a leisurely afternoon canoe trip down the Current River.

Missouri S&T hosts several summer programs in addition to the Academy. Participants will have the opportunity to join-in on other camps' activities if they'd like. If you'd like to build fireworks with the Explosives Camp, build and race a raft during the Jackling Camp or work on the Student Design Center's Formula 1 race car, feel free to jump in.

Guest Speakers

About once each week guest speakers will join everyone for lunch. Spend an afternoon picking the brain of experts in a variety of disciplines from explosives and cancer research to film and education. Many will be Missouri S&T's most dynamic researchers, business leaders and alumni.

Work Hard, Play Hard

The focus of the Academy is on your research project, and many speakers and activities will complement this academic endeavor.  But at the end of the day, it's still summer vacation and we want everyone to enjoy themselves. How you allocate your time between research, academics and fun is completely up to you. We'll have plenty of activities planned and there will be ample opportunities to get out and stretch your legs.
